From Lame Deer to Dubai

July 8, 2008

I bet you’d never guess that I met with a Northern Cheyenne tribal member today who is about to move his family to Orlando for two years to design a theme park for Dubai then move to Dubai to build it afterwards.  Well, I did!  I met with him because he helped to start a community development corporation on the reservation that AIHI would like to work with moving forward.

We had a really nice conversation during which Major said something very key to me.  While talking about the slow speed at which AIHI is developing, he commented, “but it’s the relationships that are important.  It’s great that you’re building buildings, but the relationships are what really matter.”  It’s not quantity.  It’s not meeting deadlines.  It’s getting to know people and communities from the inside out that ultimately makes the difference in the end.
