Who knew a truck stop could be so good?

January 19, 2007

Brazil has the best highway rest stops I’ve ever been in.  Forget McDonald’s and TCBY–Brazilian rest stops are full-on churrascarias, with all the meat, bread, sides, and desserts you could want.  The food is hot and delicious, even at 10 o’clock at night or 5 o’clock in the morning.  On the way to and from Foz do Iguaçu, my bus stopped twice each way for dinner and breakfast, which is common for long bus rides in Brazil.  The food was absolutely scrumptuous–nothing could have been sitting around for more than 15 minutes, and nothing was made primarily of processed ingredients except for the Coca-Cola one could buy to drink; I opted for the fresh-squeezed orange juice instead.  Imagine that–fresh-squeezed juices at a rest stop!

Anyway, I thought you might find this cultural tidbit interesting.  I´ve been writing a lot of general comments about my travels, so I thought I’d throw in something unique and specific to add some detail!
