The setting sun

October 4, 2006

I was feeling troubled this afternoon, but as I was sitting on our
futon sorting through my thoughts, I glanced out the window and noticed
streaks of pink, orange, and purple coloring the sky above the treetops
across Baltimore Avenue.  The sudden sight of nature’s beauty
soothed me.  It encouraged me to absorve the joy in that small
moment–to be in the present rather than fretting about the recent past
or the near future.

Birds chirping in a tree along Fairmount Avenue had a similar effect on
me this morning as I was biking to a meeting.  Once I picked up on
their chatter, it occurred to me that I hadn’t noticed birds chirping
for several days.  I smiled, and continued smiling for the rest of
my ride.
