Colorful children

September 21, 2006

I saw a beautiful sight on my way to work this morning:  As I got off the 58 bus and headed past the elementary school between the bus stop and my office, children of all different shapes, sizes, and colors were playing happily together on the blacktop.  Four girls–two black, one white, and one asian–jumped rope together while a lanky white boy sat between two black girls with his arms around their shoulders and a huge smile filling out his narrow face.

Northeast Philly, with its mixture of diversity and working-class poverty, has the potential for intense racial conflict; and although there certainly is some, it was encouraging to see a playground-ful of such colorful chilren frolicking together uninhibited by perceptions of difference.  I hope their outlooks and attitudes do not change as they grow older and “wiser”.
