One more thing…

September 8, 2006

I forgot to mention the most poignant moment of yesterday afternoon:

When we were walking toward the Capitol mailroom to drop off boxes of
signed work gloves and letters calling for comprehensive immigration
reform to our representatives, we passed the Supreme Court, where none
other than six immigrant workers were improving the steps leading up to
the main entrance.  They were laboring under the engraved words
“Equal Justice Under the Law” while millions of their countrymen living
and working in the USA are experiencing exploitation, aggression, and
undue fear on a daily basis.

As we walked past, Ricardo, our charismatic leader, thrust his fist in
the air and shouted “Si se puede” (we shall overcome); in response, one
of the workers dropped his tool and lifted both fists into the air,
pumping them up and down in solidarity.
